Westminster Church is pleased to announce that Jana Venter will be our new Youth Leader starting in Sept.! She brings enthusiasm and a variety of experiences to the position. This is what she says about herself ...

Jana Venter
Jana was born and raised in South Africa and immigrated to Canada in her mid-twenties via 2 years in London, England. Along the way various jobs and life experiences turned her into the person she is today. These include teaching in South Africa, working at Harrods in London, working at the Globe Theatre in Regina, becoming a mother, living in California for 2 years, running a non-profit aimed at assisting people with disabilities, and going to post-earthquake Haiti in June 2010.

"I think being an immigrant to Canada qualifies me for working with our young adults in a unique sense: I kind of experienced adolescence twice! Or at least some of the feelings involved: wanting to belong and trying to find myself in a strange, new environment. And trying to do this as a Christian in a secular world can be very challenging. I want the youth group at our church to be a safe place for young people to ask questions, and a open space for discussions ranging from the latest book craze to friends to what colour crayon you'd like to be when you grow up - and why!"

In her free time, she loves reading, dancing with her two young girls, and sewing. And she does not like cooking.

MINUTES FOR MISSION

Preserving a Culture in Stories

Scott Douglas was a United Church overseas personnel in Fiji, thanks to the Mission and Service Fund. He worked with the United Church partner Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy (ECREA), for community empowerment. Part of their work is to educate villagers about Fiji’s history. Master Sikeli was a nearly blind, retired school headmaster who held all the area’s history in his head. He knew about Fijian leaders, colonial powers, the first inhabitants, the coups, and the way indigenous peoples’ fears were exploited to allow the continuation of oppression.

Scott pointed out to ECREA staff that Sikeli wouldn’t be around forever and that someone ought to record his knowledge. Scott got the job! He worked with Master Sikeli and a cameraman, videotaping Fiji’s history from a Fijian perspective, in the Fijian language. Some material was challenging, even controversial, but it was told with Sikeli’s trademark gentleness and patience. With the support of the Mission and Service Fund, they created an invaluable resource for communities in Fiji.

The last image in the documentary is a candid of Sikeli, magnifying glass in hand, poring over an historical article. He looks up and laughs when he realizes the camera is on him. He died two weeks later. Scott says, “In some ways, the United Church sent me to Fiji to capture that image.” Your gifts to the Mission and Service Fund support important cultural and community work in Fiji and in many places around the world. Please give generously.

We are a united church! This week, remember the important
educational work we support together in local congregations,
in theological institutions, and with partners around the world.

Holy and merciful God,

Welcome Geza, Our New Assistant Minister Geza Szemok

The Szemok Family
(Left to right Dora, Ben, Alice, Geza and Daniel)

Geza ( pronounced “Gai-sah” ) joins our ministry leadership today for a one year term.

His personal “support team” includes his wife Alice, his daughter Dora (just graduated from Grade 12), and his sons Daniel(a 1st year U student) and Ben (heading for grade 6). Geza’s theology training was at Karoli Gaspar Reformed University, Faculty of Theology, Hungary where he earned a Master of Theology degree. He was ordained 17 years ago. Further courses taken in Canada have been directed toward his personal interests in counseling and communicating faith. His previous work in Winnipeg was at the Hungarian Church (Beverley and Ellis) and in rural Manitoba.

Alice, too, is a minister (she and Geza first met during their training in Hungary!) She is presently working part-time at the Hungarian Church and at the Oak Table Community Ministry (serving street people in the Osborne Village area) which is located at Augustine United.

What do they do for fun? Bicycling, swimming , exercising and skyping with family and friend in Hungary. And Geza is very computer literate (a GOOD thing!)

Welcome to Geza and his family.

The Church Board held a special meeting last Tuesday evening to receive a report from the Search Committee. At the committee's recommendation, the Board passed a motion requesting Winnipeg Presbytery to appoint the Rev. Geza Szemok to our vacant ministerial position. It is hoped that Presbytery Executive will make this appointment at its monthly meeting on Tuesday and that Rev. Szemok will be able to begin his work with us at the beginning of July. Rev. Szemok is currently the minister of Warren-Meadowlea Pastoral Charge and prior to that was minister of Hungarian United Church. We will introduce him to you more fully once his appointment is approved.

Many thanks are due to the members of the Search Committee for their efforts. Ernest Janzen and Wayne Ryzniczuk were the congregation's representatives and Rev. Janet Walker from Churchill Park United Church was the presbytery representative. Read More...

PRAYER OF APPROACH

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin
and cannot free ourselves.
We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed
by what we have done and by what we have left undone.

we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.
Forgive us, renew us, and lead us so that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

GREETING and LITANY

Leader: The LORD be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: For us and for our salvation,
Christ became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.
People: Blessed be the name of the Lord.
Leader: Behold the Lamb of God,
People: who takes away the sin of the world.
Leader: Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;
People: Yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
Leader: He was wounded for our transgressions,
he was bruised for our iniquities:
People: the chastisement of our peace was upon him;
and with his stripes we are healed.

Out Of Africa: Six Weeks In Matangwe

Out Of Africa: Six Weeks In Matangwe

Fall 2009, Leslie Roberts, RN, spent six weeks as a volunteer with Caring Partners Global in Kenya. This charitable organization was founded fifteen years ago by Steven & Sylvia Scott, two Kenyans now living in Kitchener, Ontario, to help the people of Matangwe, a small village with a large HIV population.

From its initial objectives, the organization has developed several sustainable projects that have made a big difference in the villagers’ lives and health. Matangwe now has its own dispensary and clinic, a tractor and water tank for hauling water, and a chicken coop project.

Currently, Caring Partners Global is applying to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for funds to build a community centre for adult education projects. They plan to teach skills such as metal-working, water-harvesting, and agricultural techniques and practices to improve and diversify the crops. Leslie’s mission in Matangwe was to perform the needs assessment that CIDA requires.

Leslie Roberts is a member of Westminster United Church, now resident in Ontario.

She will give an illustrated talk about life in Matangwe, Kenya on Tuesday April 13, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster United Church. Tickets $10.00, including light refreshments.

You know the face, but you can’t quite place the name. How often is that your experience in meeting folk here at Westminster on a Sunday morning? The Worship Committee has an idea to help get us over any embarrassment and to get to know each other better. That is to turn Fellowship Lunch Sundays into Nametag Sundays. We’ll start today, February 14, when you’ll be invited to fill out and wear a nametag. Of course, only God can call each one of us by name but, with a little help, we can all add more names to our repertoire.

Westminster Supports The Moose!

January 2nd was a great evening for the choir members who appeared at the Manitoba Moose game that night to sing the National Anthem. And then stayed for the game along with a bunch of others from the congregation. For every ticket we purchased a portion was donated back to the church. And everyone had a great, rowdy time of it. Yeah, Moose!
